Photos from 2014 Oso landslide response

As talked about on our latest podcast, here are some of the images from my response to the Oso, WA landslide in 2014. The recent storm damage in North Carolina and Tennessee brought to mind some valuable lessons learned and preparations you can make TODAY to better your odds for survival.

We worked many days with excavators run by local citizens, digging through the mud searching for victims.

This vehicle was crushed and buried by the mud flow. It was empty once we dug it out and cut it open.

This entire house was pushed across the valley almost intact.

Map showing the search grids laid out.

Initial days of the response, we were digging with mostly hand tools before the heavy equipment came out.

Rescue hovercraft in standby, held back by incident commanders many miles away.
